Can the Young Lions shake off their exhaustion?

In the recently concluded Asean Football Federation U-23 tournament in Bangkok, the Singapore U-23 squad, made up mostly of Young Lions’ players, finished runners-up after a 3-0 loss to hosts Thailand in the final.

The mental and physical exertions of such an intense tournament will invariably take its toll on the players; therefore it will be interesting to see how they perform against Albirex Niigata on Tuesday night.

Albirex Niigata, on the other hand, has not seen competitive action for quite a while and that could prove to be their downfall.

The White Swans were beginning to gain momentum and they were on the crest of a four-match winning streak.

Alas, the break in schedule rudely interrupted their rhythm but at least they can take heart from the fact that they are facing a Young Lions side still licking their wounds from a heartbreaking defeat in the AFF tournament.

The White Swans, however, will have to make do without inspirational captain Kenji Arai, who is suspended for this game.

Coach Otsuka Ichiro nevertheless can call upon defender Takeru Arai, who is an able deputy to partner Hiroyuki Yamamoto and Naoya Shibamura in defence.

The head honcho is spoilt for choices when it comes to the offensive options of his team. Kosei Nakamura is the newest striking revelation at the club and he could partner either Issey Nakajima or Norikazu Murakami up front.

Despite the Young Lions’ obvious weariness from playing in the AFF tournament, coach Otsuka should be wary of the threats posed by them.

With the experience gained from the tournament, the Young Lions will be a force to be reckoned with in the remaining games to play.

As team manager Eugene Loo said, “The boys need this kind of international match experience and this will be an essential part of our SEA Games preparation.”

Furthermore, the Young Lions have been boosted by the timely return of players from long term injuries. Agu Casmir has picked up from where he left off and Ashrin Shariff played in the second half of the Young Lions’ recent 3-1 win over Tampines Rovers.

But can the Young Lions recuperate in time to end the White Swans’ winning streak?
Or will coach Otsuka Ichiro’s men provide another heartbreaking moment for the Young Lions?

Be there at the Jurong East Stadium this Tuesday to find out the outcome of this exciting match.
